Endoscopic Surgery at Yaal Fertility Centre, Chennai

An overview of laparoscopy and hysteroscopy in gynaecology

What is Endoscopy (Overview)?

Endoscopy is an umbrella term for minimally invasive techniques that let a doctor see and treat problems inside the body using a thin camera, without the need for a large open incision. In gynaecology, this mainly takes two forms: laparoscopy, which examines and treats the abdominal and pelvic organs — the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the outside of the uterus — through small keyhole incisions in the abdomen, typically under general anaesthesia; and hysteroscopy, which examines and treats the inside of the uterine cavity through the cervix, with no incisions at all. As a rough guide, laparoscopy is generally the relevant approach for investigating unexplained infertility, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, or endometriosis, while hysteroscopy is generally the relevant approach for abnormal uterine bleeding, endometrial polyps, a uterine septum, or a displaced intrauterine device — though some fertility evaluations combine both in a single session for a complete picture. Both approaches share similar advantages over traditional open surgery, including smaller or no incisions, generally less pain, faster recovery, and in many cases the possibility of a day-care procedure. At Yaal Fertility Centre, we use these techniques for a range of conditions, from fibroids and endometriosis to uterine polyps and tubal disease, and can help you understand which approach is relevant to your specific situation before your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between laparoscopy and hysteroscopy?+
Laparoscopy examines and treats organs in the abdomen and pelvis, such as the ovaries, tubes, and outside of the uterus, through small incisions in the abdomen. Hysteroscopy examines and treats the inside of the uterine cavity through the cervix, without any incisions. Your doctor will recommend the one relevant to your specific concern, or occasionally both together.
Are endoscopic procedures safer than open surgery?+
Minimally invasive procedures generally involve smaller incisions, less blood loss, and faster recovery compared with open surgery, but suitability depends on the specific condition being treated. Your doctor will advise on the most appropriate approach for your situation.
Will I need to stay in hospital overnight?+
Many diagnostic and some operative endoscopic procedures can be done on a day-care basis, while more extensive operative procedures may require a short hospital stay. This depends on the complexity of the procedure and your individual recovery.
How do I know whether I need laparoscopy or hysteroscopy?+
This depends on where the suspected problem is located. Conditions affecting the ovaries, tubes, or outer uterus are generally assessed with laparoscopy, while conditions inside the uterine cavity are assessed with hysteroscopy. Your doctor will guide you based on your symptoms, scans, and history.
