What is HSG & Tubal Patency Test?
Checking whether the fallopian tubes are open is a key step in understanding a couple's fertility, since blocked or damaged tubes can prevent the egg and sperm from meeting naturally. At Yaal Fertility Centre, we offer a few ways to assess tubal patency, including hysterosalpingography (HSG), an X-ray based test using contrast dye, HyCoSy, an ultrasound-based alternative that avoids radiation, and, where indicated, diagnostic laparoscopy with a dye test, which allows direct visualisation of the pelvis. The test is usually scheduled in the first half of the menstrual cycle, after bleeding has stopped and before ovulation, to avoid disrupting a possible pregnancy. The right test depends on your individual history and what else your doctor needs to assess at the same time. The result of tubal testing often shapes the next step in your fertility plan: open tubes generally keep IUI or natural conception on the table, a blockage usually points toward IVF since it bypasses the tubes entirely, and a hydrosalpinx (a fluid-filled, damaged tube) is often recommended for surgical removal before an IVF cycle, since the fluid it contains can otherwise flow back into the uterus and reduce the chance of embryo implantation.
