What is a premarital health checkup?

A premarital checkup is a set of screening tests and a consultation for both partners before marriage. It tells you your health baseline and any risks you may share as a future family.

It is preventive care, not a test of whether you suit each other.

Book a joint appointment for both partners. Our team confirms your visit and tells you how to prepare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a premarital health checkup mandatory in India?+
No, it is not a legal requirement, but doctors recommend it. It lets both partners find manageable conditions early, know their Rh status and carrier status, and make informed plans for a future pregnancy.
Do both partners need to come for the checkup?+
Ideally, yes. Several results, such as Rh status and thalassaemia carrier status, only mean something when both partners are tested, and reviewing them together saves a second visit. If one partner cannot come at the same time, they can give their samples separately.
How long before the wedding should we have the checkup?+
A few months before is ideal. It leaves time to repeat a borderline test, complete a rubella vaccination (pregnancy should be avoided for a month afterwards), or arrange genetic counselling if both partners carry the same condition.
Where in Chennai can we have the checkup?+
Samples can be given at any of Yaal's eight centres across Chennai: Kilpauk, Mylapore, Thiruvanmiyur, Pallikaranai, Madipakkam, Red Hills and Velappanchavadi. Book an appointment and choose the centre closest to you.
Are fertility tests part of the premarital checkup?+
Only if you want them. The standard checkup covers general health, carrier status and infections. Couples planning a pregnancy soon after marriage can add an AMH test and pelvic ultrasound for the woman and a semen analysis for the man.
How should we prepare for the tests?+
Fast for 8 to 12 hours overnight before your morning blood tests; water is fine. Bring any previous reports and a list of medicines you take. Samples are collected at the centre.
Are the results kept confidential?+
Yes. Your results are discussed only with you, and you review them together as a couple with our specialist. Nothing is shared with family or anyone else without your consent.
What if a test result is abnormal?+
Most findings are treatable or manageable. Your doctor explains what the result means and arranges the next step, whether that is treatment, a vaccination, a repeat test or genetic counselling.

The full guide to Premarital Health Checkup

What is a premarital health checkup

+

A premarital health checkup is a set of screening tests and a consultation for both partners before marriage, so that you start married life knowing your health baseline and any risks you may share as a future family.

It is preventive care, not a test of whether a couple is suitable for each other. Almost everything it finds is treatable, preventable or manageable when it is known early: an Rh-negative blood group is planned for in pregnancy, a thalassaemia carrier couple can get genetic counselling before their first pregnancy, and an infection or early diabetes can be treated before it causes harm.

At Yaal Fertility Centre, Dr. Rukkayal Fathima, MRCOG (UK), and our specialists review the results with you together and in confidence, explain what each finding means, and arrange genetic counselling where it is needed.

Which Tests Are Included in a Premarital Health Checkup?

+

The checkup is tailored to your history, but the core panel for both partners covers:

  • Blood group & Rh typing: to know whether the woman is Rh-negative.
  • Complete blood count (CBC) & haemoglobin HPLC: for anaemia and to detect thalassaemia or sickle cell carrier status.
  • HIV, Hepatitis B (HBsAg), Hepatitis C and syphilis (VDRL): infections that can be treated or prevented from passing to a partner or baby.
  • Fasting blood sugar & HbA1c: for diabetes and insulin resistance.
  • Thyroid function: an underactive or overactive thyroid affects periods, fertility and pregnancy.
  • Rubella IgG (for women): to confirm immunity to German measles.
  • Urine routine, with liver and kidney function where your history calls for it.

Couples who plan a pregnancy soon after marriage can add an AMH test and pelvic ultrasound for her and a semen analysis for him. This is optional and never a condition of the checkup. Read who benefits from a fertility test before marriage.

What Your Results Can Tell You

+

Most couples get reassuring results. When something is found, knowing it before marriage gives you time to plan. The three findings couples ask about most:

Whatever your results, our specialists explain them to you together and arrange counselling or follow-up where needed.

Premarital Health Checkup vs Preconception Care

+

A premarital checkup is done before marriage, whenever you plan to start a family. It establishes your health baseline, Rh and carrier status, and screens for infections.

Preconception care comes later, when a couple is about to start trying for a pregnancy: starting folic acid, adjusting medicines, catching up on vaccinations and optimising weight and lifestyle. If you plan a pregnancy soon after marriage, the two can be combined in one visit.
