What is Hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to look directly inside the uterine cavity using a thin, lighted camera passed through the cervix, without any abdominal incisions — which is what distinguishes it from laparoscopy, a separate keyhole procedure that examines the outside of the uterus, ovaries, and tubes through small incisions in the abdomen. In its diagnostic form, hysteroscopy helps identify causes of abnormal bleeding, recurrent implantation failure or recurrent miscarriage, or suspected structural issues such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or a uterine septum that a standard ultrasound may not fully characterise. When a problem is found, the same technique can often be extended into operative hysteroscopy, treating conditions like polyps, submucosal fibroids, intrauterine adhesions, or a septum in the same setting. It's typically scheduled in the week or so after your period ends, when the uterine lining is thinnest and easiest to examine clearly.
