Start before the pregnancy test

Some of the most useful steps happen before you conceive. Folic acid works best when started about three months ahead, and a thyroid or sugar problem is easier to settle before pregnancy than during it. Dr. Preethi M lists preconception care among her specialities, and this is what that visit is for.

Once you are pregnant, the same doctor sees you through the check-ups. All three obstetricians here are trained in high-risk obstetrics, so if BP, sugar or bleeding becomes a concern, you stay with a doctor who already knows you.

The centre is on the second floor at Malaviya Avenue, just off the Thiruvanmiyur signal. Women come from Adyar, Besant Nagar, Indira Nagar, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam and Neelankarai, and from offices at Tidel Park, Ramanujan IT City and the International Tech Park in Taramani.

Pregnancies we keep a closer eye on

Pregnancy after 35 or 40

More frequent checks for blood pressure and sugar, and a clear plan for screening tests.

A past miscarriage

An early scan for reassurance and a schedule built around what happened before.

High blood pressure or diabetes

Regular readings, diet advice and medicine where needed, with growth scans arranged at the right time.

Conceiving after IVF

Thiruvanmiyur has its own IVF laboratory, so women who conceive here move to antenatal care on the same floor.

Easy to reach from the coast and the IT corridor

Thiruvanmiyur MRTS station is minutes away, and the centre sits between East Coast Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai. Taramani and Kandanchavadi are close by, so a routine check-up rarely needs more than a few hours away from work. The centre is open 9 AM to 7 PM, Monday to Sunday.

Before you try, and the first weeks after

  1. 1

    Start folic acid

    About 3 months before trying

A daily tablet that lowers the risk of spine and brain defects in the baby. Your doctor tells you the right dose.

  2. 2

    Preconception blood tests

    At the same visit

Haemoglobin, thyroid, sugar and blood group, plus a check of rubella immunity, since that vaccine must be given before pregnancy.

  3. 3

    Review your medicines

    Before you stop contraception

Some tablets for BP, fits or acne are not safe in pregnancy. Your doctor switches them before you conceive, not after.

  4. 4

    Positive test

    About 6–8 weeks

A scan to confirm the heartbeat and due date, your first antenatal blood tests, and the start of regular check-ups.

Questions We Hear Often

Can I see a doctor here before I try to conceive?+
Yes. A preconception visit with Dr. Preethi M or another obstetrician covers folic acid, blood tests, your current medicines and anything from a past pregnancy that should be planned for.
Is delivery done at Thiruvanmiyur?+
No. The operation theatre at Thiruvanmiyur is for IVF procedures. Babies are born at Yaal's Kilpauk hospital, and your doctor plans that with you before your due date.
I'm over 40 and pregnant. Can my care be here?+
Yes. All three obstetricians at this centre are trained in high-risk pregnancy care. You will be seen more often, and screening tests are planned early.
I work at Tidel Park. How far is the centre?+
Taramani and Thiruvanmiyur are next to each other, and the centre is just off the Thiruvanmiyur signal. Thiruvanmiyur MRTS is also close by.
Which scans can I have at the centre?+
Your routine pregnancy scans. When the NT scan (11–13 weeks) and the anomaly scan (about 20 weeks) are due, your obstetrician arranges these specialised scans for you.
What should I bring to a preconception or early pregnancy visit?+
If you are already pregnant, note the first day of your last period and bring any scans done so far. Either way, carry your blood group card, reports from earlier pregnancies and whatever medicines or supplements you take, so the obstetrician can plan around them.
Do I need a referral to book?+
No. You can book a pregnancy or preconception visit directly using the form on this page.
