Meet the Thiruvanmiyur gynaecology team

Three women obstetrician-gynecologists. Dr. Preethi M is trained in laparoscopic gynaecological surgery (FMAS) and preconception care, and Dr. Anuvigashini M focuses on women's wellness.

Mothers and daughters, often in the same week

Families from Adyar, Besant Nagar, Indira Nagar, Kottivakkam and Palavakkam often find that a mother and daughter need a gynecologist at around the same time. The daughter may be fourteen, with painful or irregular periods. The mother may be in her mid-forties, with heavier bleeding, poor sleep and hot flushes.

Periods are often irregular for the first two years, so a girl's cycle doesn't have to run like clockwork. The mother's changes are usually the run-up to menopause. Both can still hide something worth treating, such as anaemia, a thyroid problem or a fibroid, and the same team can see both of you on the same day.

Teenagers are seen with a parent. The first visit is a conversation and, if needed, an abdominal scan, with no internal examination. For women nearing menopause, the doctor checks the womb lining on ultrasound, tests thyroid and blood count, and talks through ways to ease the symptoms.

Women working at Tidel Park, Ramanujan IT City or the International Tech Park in Taramani can come in on a weekend, since the centre is open all seven days. Dr. Preethi M also sees women who want a preconception check-up a few years before planning a family.

From first periods to the menopause years

Grouped by stage of life, though any woman can come for any of these.

Painful first periods

Missing school every month is a reason to see a doctor, not something to put up with.

Heavy or irregular teen periods

A gap of more than three months, or bleeding that lasts over a week, is worth checking for anaemia, thyroid problems or PCOS.

PCOS in your twenties

Cycles, skin, hair and weight, with a plan that fits college or work.

Pre-marriage check and contraception

A health check before marriage if you want one, and advice on contraception that suits you.

Fibroids and heavy bleeding in your forties

Found on a scan and managed according to size, symptoms and your wishes.

Perimenopause

Irregular cycles, hot flushes, mood and sleep changes in the years before periods stop.

After menopause

Bone health, vaginal dryness, and any bleeding after menopause, which always needs checking.

Discharge and infections

Itching, smell or a change in colour, treated at any age, with a swab if needed.

Most tests are done in the same visit.

At the Thiruvanmiyur centre

  • Pelvic ultrasound, abdominal for girls and unmarried women
  • Pap smear for cervical screening
  • Swabs for discharge or infection
  • Haemoglobin, thyroid and hormone blood tests
  • A counselling room for longer conversations
  • Medicines from the on-site pharmacy

Arranged at Yaal Kilpauk

  • Laparoscopic or hysteroscopic surgery, if ever needed
  • Hospital admission

Signs a mother or daughter shouldn't sit on

A teenager who soaks through a pad within an hour or faints with period pain. A woman of any age who bleeds after menopause, after intercourse or between periods. Any of these is worth a visit within days.

Questions We Hear Often

My daughter is 13. Can she see a gynecologist here?+
Yes, with a parent. The visit is a conversation about her periods, and an abdominal scan only if it is needed. There is no internal examination for young girls.
Can my daughter and I come on the same day?+
Yes. Book a separate appointment for each of you on the same day.
Where is the centre?+
Second Floor, No. 1, 3rd Street, Malaviya Avenue, Thiruvanmiyur, just off the Thiruvanmiyur signal. The bus terminus and Thiruvanmiyur MRTS station are a few minutes away, and both ECR and OMR are close by.
Are all the gynecologists women?+
Yes. Dr. Rukkayal Fathima, Dr. Preethi M and Dr. Anuvigashini M, who consult at Thiruvanmiyur, are all women.
I'm 47 and having hot flushes. Is that something a gynecologist treats?+
Yes. Perimenopause and menopause symptoms are a regular part of our work, from hot flushes and sleep to bone health and irregular bleeding.
Do I need a referral from another doctor?+
No. You can book directly. If you have earlier scan or blood reports, bring them along so the doctor can compare.
What should my daughter or I bring on the first day?+
A record of recent period dates is the most useful thing, even a rough one for a teenager. Add any blood or ultrasound reports already done, the medicines being taken, and a few lines on what prompted the visit, such as flushes or irregular bleeding.
What does a consultation cost, and when are you open?+
A consultation with an ultrasound costs ₹300 to ₹600. The centre is open from 9 AM to 7 PM, Monday to Sunday.
