Period pain that stops your day isn't normal

If you take leave every month, rely on painkillers that barely help, or have pain during intercourse or when opening your bowels around your period, see a gynecologist. These can be signs of endometriosis, which often goes undiagnosed for years.

Gynecology concerns we see in Mylapore

Pain brings many women in, but it is far from the only reason.

Severe period pain

Checked with a pelvic scan in the same visit. Pain that is getting worse year by year is a particular reason to look for a cause.

Endometriosis

Diagnosis, pain control and long-term care, including advice on surgery when medicines aren't enough.

Ovarian cysts

Including 'chocolate' cysts linked to endometriosis, measured and tracked with repeat scans.

Fibroids and heavy periods

Watched, treated with medicines, or planned for removal, depending on size and symptoms.

Menopause

Hot flushes, sleep, mood, vaginal dryness and bone health.

Bleeding after menopause

Always worth checking. It usually starts with an ultrasound of the womb lining.

PCOS and hormone problems

Irregular cycles, acne and hair changes, with hormone and thyroid tests.

Discharge, infections and screening

Swabs, treatment and Pap smears in a private consulting room.

From first visit to a surgical opinion

Diagnosing endometriosis starts with your story: when the pain comes, how bad it gets, and what it stops you doing. A pelvic ultrasound in the same visit can show the ovarian cysts linked to endometriosis, though smaller patches often don't show on a scan.

Many women do well on medicines that quieten the cycle and control pain. When they don't, or when a cyst is large, Dr. P. Lakshmi Priyaa, whose specialities include laparoscopic surgery, hysteroscopy and endometriosis surgery, can advise whether an operation would help. Mylapore has no operation theatre, so any surgery is planned at a Yaal centre that has one, while your check-ups stay on Luz Church Road.

For women in Alwarpet, R.A. Puram, Mandaveli, Santhome, Abhiramapuram and Gopalapuram, most visits stay in the neighbourhood, a short ride along TTK Road or Royapettah High Road, or from Thirumayilai MRTS.

Help through the menopause years

Indian women often reach menopause in their mid to late forties, and the changes can start a few years before periods stop. Hot flushes that wake you at night, mood swings, dryness and aching joints are easy to put up with quietly, but each of them can be treated. The doctor also checks thyroid, blood count and bone health along the way.

Any bleeding after your periods have stopped for a full year should be checked. At Mylapore that starts with an ultrasound of the womb lining in the same visit, and your doctor explains what, if anything, needs to happen next.

Questions We Hear Often

Can endometriosis be diagnosed at the Mylapore centre?+
The assessment starts here, with your history, an examination if you agree, and a pelvic ultrasound. Scans can show endometriosis cysts but not every patch, so your doctor may diagnose it from your symptoms or suggest laparoscopy to confirm it.
Will I need surgery for endometriosis?+
Not necessarily. Many women manage well with medicines. Surgery is discussed when pain continues despite treatment or a cyst is large, and it is planned at a Yaal centre with an operation theatre.
Is the centre close to Alwarpet and Mandaveli?+
Yes. The centre is at No. 149/1, Luz Church Road, Bhaskarapuram, Mylapore, a short drive from Alwarpet, Mandaveli, R.A. Puram and Santhome, and near Thirumayilai MRTS.
Do you see women going through menopause?+
Yes. Hot flushes, poor sleep, vaginal dryness, bone health and any bleeding after menopause are all seen here.
Will a woman doctor examine me?+
Yes. Both gynecologists at Mylapore, Dr. Rukkayal Fathima and Dr. P. Lakshmi Priyaa, are women.
Which details should I bring for a period pain assessment?+
If you can, track a couple of cycles first: start dates, heavy days and the days pain is worst. Carry previous pelvic scans and blood results, and the painkillers or hormone tablets you have tried, so the doctor knows what has and hasn't helped.
Is the scan included in the consultation fee?+
Yes. The consultation and an ultrasound together cost ₹300 to ₹600. Blood tests are extra, and you are told what they cost before they are done.
